Crispy Cinnamon Apple Chips

So I had a day off ealier this week and used it as a perfect opportunity to get some much needed cleaning (or..facebook/pinterest/foodgawking/recipe making) done around the house… as you can imagine I got a lot of cleaning done…

So as I was “cleaning” I thought, what a great time to make some apple chips! These are a great snack to pop in the oven and let bake while you are busy around the house. The mouthwatering smell literally permeates the entire house! I used to babysit this family when I was younger and the mom always put cinnamon sticks over the vents, so their house always smelt wonderful. I’ll never forget that smell and this totally reminded me of it!

The apple chips do take some time, especially if you want them nice and crispy, but if you aren’t in a hurry they are a great snack!

I played around with the time I had them in the oven and the temperature and managed to get perfectly crispy chips at the end! One apple makes about 13-15 chips, which is a perfect serving size in my mind! The chips are baked, so no oil or grease, and they are perked up with a pinch of cinnamon and coconut sugar. The coconut sugar is totally optional as the apples have enough sweetness on their own, but I thought I would add a tad anyway!

They key to making these chips is to soak the apple slices in lemon water for a few minutes before they go in the oven. This prevents them from oxidizing and turning brown.

These little chips are a great option for the kiddies too, as they are enjoyed by the pickiest of food critics, and a healthy alternative to real chips or even packaged fruit snacks which are always packed with refined sugars and other unpronounceable ingredients.

Total time

Serves: 2
Ingredients
  • 2 medium apples (I used Gala, you can use whichever you like!)
  • 1 lemon
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tsp cinnamon
  • 1 tsp organic coconut sugar (optional)
Instructions
  1. Preheat oven to 275 degrees.
  2. Meanwhile, cut apples into very thin slices, about 13-15 per apple. Then soak the slices in the water with the juice of one lemon.
  3. Cover a baking sheet with parchment paper and place a footed cooling rack on top of the parchment.
  4. Remove the apples from the water and place on paper towel. Blot dry. Place the slices on the rack.
  5. Mix the cinnamon and coconut sugar in a bowl and sprinkle lightly over all the apple slices, on both sides.
  6. Bake the slices for 40 minutes, then flip, and continue to bake for 50 more minutes.
  7. Turn the oven to "warm" setting, and let the chips continue to cook for up to 1 hour or until crispy.
Notes
Double or triple the recipe to make more chips and store them in a Tupperware container and enjoy over time!
