Things are going to get a little deep up in here today. I’m going to share some things that are maybe a bit more personal than I’d usually put out there on the blog but because the theme of today’s post reaches me on a very personal level and because I think it just might reach some of you on that level too… I’m just going to go there!
I’d be lying if I said that STRESS and I don’t have a long drawn out past, somewhat of a present, and I’m hoping much less of a future together. Over the past decade, oh those 20’s, I came to the realization that I am the type of personal prone to perfectionism and anxiety. Oh, joy!
Perfectionism and anxiety unfortunately = STRESS! Stress on my body, mind, and truthfully, my spirit.
I had many times ignorantly pushed myself to extremes in many areas of my life during my 20’s and last year at 28 I finally found myself in a messy, crumpled heap of exhaustion needing all the help I could get (out the window went my pride and honestly it was about time).
Never had I known so clearly the incredible detriment that stress (physical, mental, and emotional) can have on the human body. I experienced this detriment personally in my body in many horrible ways…last year truly held some dark days for me, but in the long run I can look at it as a blessing because it taught me a very important lesson in self-care. I can admit it’s definitely been a long, bumpy road of recovery that has included more prayers than I’ve prayed in my entire life, many encouraging hugs from my husband and family, two amazing Naturopathic doctors, a fridge full of supplements, a whole lot of rest, rest, rest and a major focus on stress management.
Over the past few months I found myself sliding backwards as old habits crept back up, but it didn’t take me long to recognize that my boundaries and stress management had fallen and needed to be put at the top of my priority list again.
Sigh. Why can’t I just do it ALL???
I can’t explain the amount of frustration I sometimes feel when I sense the undeniable passion for what I do bubbling up inside of me only to find out that I have limitations. We all do. I’ve realized that I need to be intentional about managing my stress, setting boundaries, and cultivating calm if I want to be healthier both physically and mentally for years to come. Funnily enough I also talk to my clients about the importance of stress management ALL THE TIME. Ah, the whole practice what you preach thing eludes me a lot in this sense. Yes, as a Nutritionist I eat a balanced diet and exercise regularly, but I still struggle with managing stress, workload, and setting boundaries, so I continue to make this a focus of mine on the daily!
The guide begins with morning, which in my opinion can make or break the day. When I am overstressed or going through a time where I have felt that loom of anxiety, how I handle my morning routine will really set the tone for my day.
The 24 Hours of Calm guide suggests not hitting snooze a million times but rather setting the alarm for the time you actually NEED to get up and just slowly pulling yourself out of bed. This is a great tip for me as I tend to be a snooze presser but that only leads to choppy sleep and more time to lie in bed overthinking how my day might go. I’ve recently tried this tip of getting up with my alarm and I’ve already noticed a positive effect on my energy and my mood!
