So I had a day off ealier this week and used it as a perfect opportunity to get some much needed cleaning (or..facebook/pinterest/foodgawking/recipe making) done around the house… as you can imagine I got a lot of cleaning done…
So as I was “cleaning” I thought, what a great time to make some apple chips! These are a great snack to pop in the oven and let bake while you are busy around the house. The mouthwatering smell literally permeates the entire house! I used to babysit this family when I was younger and the mom always put cinnamon sticks over the vents, so their house always smelt wonderful. I’ll never forget that smell and this totally reminded me of it!
The apple chips do take some time, especially if you want them nice and crispy, but if you aren’t in a hurry they are a great snack!
I played around with the time I had them in the oven and the temperature and managed to get perfectly crispy chips at the end! One apple makes about 13-15 chips, which is a perfect serving size in my mind! The chips are baked, so no oil or grease, and they are perked up with a pinch of cinnamon and coconut sugar. The coconut sugar is totally optional as the apples have enough sweetness on their own, but I thought I would add a tad anyway!
They key to making these chips is to soak the apple slices in lemon water for a few minutes before they go in the oven. This prevents them from oxidizing and turning brown.
These little chips are a great option for the kiddies too, as they are enjoyed by the pickiest of food critics, and a healthy alternative to real chips or even packaged fruit snacks which are always packed with refined sugars and other unpronounceable ingredients.
- 2 medium apples (I used Gala, you can use whichever you like!)
- 1 lemon
- 2 cups water
- 1 tsp cinnamon
- 1 tsp organic coconut sugar (optional)
- Preheat oven to 275 degrees.
- Meanwhile, cut apples into very thin slices, about 13-15 per apple. Then soak the slices in the water with the juice of one lemon.
- Cover a baking sheet with parchment paper and place a footed cooling rack on top of the parchment.
- Remove the apples from the water and place on paper towel. Blot dry. Place the slices on the rack.
- Mix the cinnamon and coconut sugar in a bowl and sprinkle lightly over all the apple slices, on both sides.
- Bake the slices for 40 minutes, then flip, and continue to bake for 50 more minutes.
- Turn the oven to "warm" setting, and let the chips continue to cook for up to 1 hour or until crispy.
Hello! This recipie sounds so yummy! And I am very excited to try it out, but I am unsure what organic coconut sugar is. Could you enlighten me on this? I would really appreciate it. Thank you very much!
Perfect for my little one!
Yes!! A healthy snack for little fingers! 🙂
Hi Christal, I love this recipe and will make it for my granddaughter. But I’m confused by the nutritional information. Is there really 193 calories in two chips? Yikes. I hope i just read this wrong otherwise these will become a treat and not a snack. Thanks, Susan
Hi Susan! Wow! Thanks for pointing that out – I realized I put the wrong nutrition picture up!! The calories are not nearly that high! Sorry!! I will get this fixed ASAP!!
I am LOVING these recipes! I am not a cook, by any means, but I try to eat clean and stay healthy. These are explained very well and not rocket science, I’m in love! (zuchini chips in oven as I type!) THANK YOU THANK YOU!
Thanks a bunch Ashleigh! You are going to LOVE the zucchini chips! 🙂
Thanks so much for sharing! Can’t wait to try these and the zucchini chips this weekend. Just a question – how long do you think you can keep the apple chips before they go bad?
Hi Rosie! I would recommend eating the apple chips within 3-4 days!
I’m so excited to find your website! My 12 year old daughter suffers from IBS and extreme stomach sensitivity. I am trying to find the best recipes for her that I can. I love your site.
