Delicious Easy Chia Seed Jam Three Ways

Easter and Easy Chia Seed Jam.

Happy Easter my friends! Today I am gathering together with family and enjoying a delicious Easter meal as we celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus. We will also definitely be hiding an Easter basket filled with bunny books and toys and treats for Hemsley to find (I can’t wait to watch her hunt her first Easter basket!!) but in all honesty this holiday is so much more to me than bunnies and chocolate eggs. While I try my best to practice and live out my faith every day, I am always humbled and filled with gratitude on this particular day, Easter, as I mediate on the sacrifice and unconditional love of Jesus. How good is He and how blessed are we!

People sometimes ask me if I’m religious when I say that I go to church or believe in God, and to that I usually answer “no, I’m not”. My faith is founded on my belief in Jesus as the son of God and is also founded in my very close and personal relationship with him. It’s not about rules, doctrines, and do’s and dont’s, but rather my desire to seek God, read the word, and let Him rule my heart and mind so that the life I lead reflects one of integrity, grace, and love. On Easter, I celebrate the amazing sacrifice that was made for mankind and the great freedom we receive living a life in fellowship with Christ. I find when I talk about my faith I get a lot of questions and I love that! If you want to know more about what I believe, email me! I’m definitely open to chatting more about it.

In consideration of the Easter holiday I wanted to keep this recipe post short and sweet! Easy chia seed jam, it’s simple and sweet, so I think it fits for today! Plus, if you are hosting an Easter brunch today or tomorrow, these easy chia seed jams might just be a great addition to your Easter meal!

Easy Chia Seed Jam Three Ways - Blueberry Vanilla, Raspberry Lemon, Strawberry Ginger

While I’ve made chia seed jam in the past for the blog I typically always incorporate it into a recipe like the cherry chia jam in my Cherry Chia Overnight Oats or the mango chia jam in myMango Chia Jam & Sweet Cherry Breakfast Bowl. It was time I shared about chia seed jam all on it’s own!

I love the simplicity of this recipe and how many variations of chia seed jam that can be made. Seriously, just search chia seed jam on Pinterest and see how many kinds are out there, it’s crazy! The idea really is rather brilliant as it’s pretty neat how chia seeds can create such a great “jammy” consistency without the need for pectin, the typical jam thickening ingredient.

How To Make Chia Seed Jam:

There’s really only a few simple steps you need to follow to make chia seed jam and the sky’s the limit when it comes to flavours!

  1. Mash or purée 1 cup of fruit with 1/4 cup of water to create a puree consistency
  2. Add puréed or mashed fruit to a jar or bowl
  3. Add in 1-2 tablespoons of chia seeds (use 2 tablespoons of chia seeds if the fruit purée is runnier)
  4. Add in 1-2 tablespoons of your liquid sweetener of choice (honey, pure maple syrup, coconut nectar)
  5. Add in a touch any other flavours you prefer (vanilla extract, ginger, lemon, orange extract, almond extract, cinnamon, etc.)
  6. Mix everything together really well and let it sit in the fridge for at least 2 hours, preferably overnight.*

The chia seeds will plump up and bind together the fruit to make a jam-like consistency perfect for spreading over toast or pancakes or adding to oatmeal, yogurt, or a bowl of granola. You can really put chia jam on whatever you want. I actually think chia seed jam could even be a great substitute for cranberry sauce on turkey or a roast!

*If your chia jam doesn’t thicken as much as you’d like simply add more chia seeds, about 1 tablespoon.

Healthy and Easy Chia Seed Jam Three Ways

I chose to keep the three variations of chia seed jam I made pretty simple: Strawberry Ginger Chia Jam, Raspberry Lemon Chia Jam, and Blueberry Vanilla Chia Jam, each with it’s own distinct flavour and each with a little bit of a different consistency.

I think my personal favourite is the raspberry lemon as I have always loved raspberries since childhood and they remind me of my Baba (Ukrainian grandmother) and the homemade raspberry syrup she’d always have in her fridge for us to put on our ice cream or eat straight up with a spoon. So yummy!

Chia seed jam is also quite a bit healthier than your regular run-of-the-mill jam. It’s free of refined sugar (which is typically the main ingredient in most store-bought jams) and has a great amount of fibre and healthy fats that come from the chia seeds. Chia seeds truly are a superfood and have an amazing nutritional value. I’ve talked about these powerful little seeds on the blog before but they essentially act as a “chimney sweep” for your digestive system helping to keep things moving smoothly and eliminate toxins from the body.

I actually love making chia seed jam for my almost 2-year old daughter Hemsley as she definitely has a love for sweet things and barely ever goes a day without nut butter and jam toast in the morning or a little jam sandwich as an afternoon snack. Of all the little healthy seeds and ingredients I sneak into her food chia and hemp seeds are the main ones… she’s none the wiser!

Easy Chia Seed Jam Three Ways

Ingredients
  • Blueberry Vanilla Chia Jam:
  • 1 cup fresh or frozen blueberries (I used frozen, thawed)
  • ¼ cup water
  • 1 tablespoon honey or other liquid sweetener of choice
  • ½ teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 2 tablespoons chia seeds
  • Raspberry Lemon Chia Jam:
  • 1 cup fresh or frozen raspberries (I used frozen, thawed)
  • ¼ cup water
  • 1½ tablespoons honey or other liquid sweetener of choice
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds
  • Strawberry Ginger Chia Jam:
  • 1 cup fresh or frozen strawberries (I use frozen, thawed)
  • ¼ cup water
  • 1 tablespoon honey or other liquid sweetener of choice
  • ½ teaspoon freshly grated ginger or ¼ tsp ground ginger
  • 1 tablespoon chia seeds
Instructions
  1. Begin by blending or mashing the fruit (blueberries, raspberries, or strawberries) with the water until you have a purée consistency.
  2. Add the fruit puree to a bowl or jar and add in the chia seeds, sweetener, and lemon, ginger, or vanilla.
  3. Stir everything well to combine and place in the fridge for a minimum of 2 hours, the jam will thicken the longer it stays in the fridge. I find the best consistency is achieved overnight.
  4. Enjoy the jam as desired and keep in the fridge for up to 5 days.
Notes
Each Chia Seed Jam recipe makes about 1 cup of jam.
