Homemade Vegan Gnocchi Recipe Made Easy!

I absolutely love gnocchi and once in a blue moon my hubby and I will pick up a bag from the Italian Center here in our city and make a delicious Bolognese sauce to pour over the gnocchi. Because “gnocchi” can be a little tough to pronounce we told Hemlsey (our 2-year old daughter) that they are “little pierogies”. Traditional gnocchi is made from potatoes, egg, and flour, and pierogies aren’t that different, flour, egg, potatoes (and maybe some cheese!) and our daughter happily gobbles away the ”little pierogies”.

Unfortunately traditional gnocchi doesn’t sit well with me because it’s made mainly from white flour, so today I’m sharing a super simple, delicious recipe I came up with for Homemade Vegan Gnocchi recipe that’s made with gluten free flour, coconut flour, sweet potatoes, salt, and a touch of coconut palm sugar.

For years I assumed that making any type of homemade pasta would be challenging. There are so many kinds and they all seem very intricate, gnocchi included. However, this past summer, a friend of ours who is a chef taught myself and some friends how to make several types of pasta at home. It was tons of fun, and while some of the past required some technique, it was much easier than I had anticipated. I was excited to take some of the tips I learned and put them into practice to make my own delicious gluten-free homemade pasta.

How To Make Vegan Gnocchi From Scratch

To make this delicious, healthier homemade vegan sweet potato gnocchi pasta I kept it super, super simple. Here’s what you’ll need:

Making delicious Homemade Vegan Sweet Potato Gnocchi in the kitchen

Once you have all of your materials ready, you can begin making delicious homemade sweet potato gnocchi in a flash! To make the gnocchi, there are a few steps:

  1. Peel and dice the sweet potato then boil it until fork-tender.
  2. Puree the sweet potato, salt, and coconut sugar in a food processor.
  3. Combine sweet potato puree and flour to form a dough.
  4. Place dough on a lightly floured clean surface and divide it into dough balls.
  5. Roll each dough ball gently to create a long, thin, snake-like form of dough.
  6. Cut the dough “snakes” into 1 inch pieces and press each piece lightly with a fork.

Once you get the hang of it making gnocchi is very easy and straight-forward. Then, you can either saute the homemade sweet potato gnocchi in a pan with other ingredients or cook it in boiling water for a few minutes until puffy.

For this particular recipe I decided to boil the gnocchi and then add it to a saucepan with a delicious and simple vegan butter, coconut sugar, and sage sauce so that the gnocchi would get slightly toasted and be coated with the delicious sauce.

Vegan Gnocchi Sauce

Vegan sweet potato gnocchi and regular potato gnocchi can really be enjoyed so many different ways with different sauces and toppings. For my homemade vegan sweet potato gnocchi the sweet sage and brown butter sauce was the perfect fit. The three simple flavours made a perfect mix of sweet and savoury to complement the puffy and doughy sweet potato gnocchi.

What you’ll need for the sauce:

  • Vegan Butter (or regular grass-fed butter if you don’t need this recipe to be vegan or dairy-free)
  • Coconut Palm Sugar
  • Fresh Sage
  • Salt

This dish is truly perfect for the fall season, cooler weather, Thanksgiving, and any other time you might be craving comfort food but want to keep it mostly healthy! The sweet potatoes bring in fibre, complex carbohydrates, and loads of vitamin A. In fact, just 100g of sweet potatoes provides the daily recommended intake of vitamin A. So essentially, one tasty serving of this delicious homemade vegan sweet potato gnocchi will tick of your vitamin A intake needs for the day!

I shared on my Instagram stories after I made this recipe how easy it was to use my Cuisinart Custom Food Processor from The Brick to puree the sweet potatoes perfectly in just seconds. The food processor is so powerful, sleek, and looks beautiful on any kitchen counter. With Christmas coming up now is the perfect time to be looking for gifts and I definitely think the Cuisinart Food Processor (as well as many other small kitchen appliances from The Brick) would be a great option!

Have you made your own homemade sweet potato gnocchi or regular gnocchi before? I’d love to know what combination of ingredients you use or if you prefer to go with pre-made! Tell me about it in the comments and be sure to pin the photo below the recipe to save this one for later!

Easy and Simple Homemade Vegan Sweet Potato Gnocchi (Gluten Free)

Homemade Vegan Gnocchi Recipe (Gluten Free)

Yield: Makes 3-4
Prep Time: 20 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: 35 minutes

This delicious homemade vegan sweet potato gnocchi is gluten free, dairy free, and made with just 4 main ingredients. It’s so easy and makes a great healthy comfort food!

Ingredients

  • 1 large sweet potato, peeled and cut into cubes then boiled or roasted until fork tender (2 heaping cups)*
  • 1/4 cup coconut flour
  • 3/4 cup all-purpose gluten-free flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon coconut palm sugar

Vegan Butter Sage Sauce:

  • 2 tablespoons vegan butter
  • 1 tablespoon coconut palm sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 4 sage leaves, chopped finely

Optional Garnish:

  • Vegan parmesan cheese (I used Earth Island)
  • Black pepper

Instructions

  1. Prepare the sweet potato ahead of time or boil until fork-tender, then let cool - you should have two heaping cups in total.
  2. Add the cooked sweet potato, salt, and coconut palm sugar to a food processor and process for 1 minute until completely smooth, transfer to a large mixing bowl.
  3. Add in the coconut flour and gluten free flour and fold in until you form a large dough ball (it may be slightly sticky and soft, that's ok).
  4. Generously flour a large, clean surface such as a marble board or your kitchen counter.
  5. Divide the sweet potato dough into 3 equal portions and very gently using your hands roll each portion of dough into a long snake-like shape about 1 inch in diameter.
  6. Slice the "snake" of dough into 1 inch pieces and lightly press each piece with a fork, complete the process until you have turned all the dough into small gnocchi pieces.
  7. Bring a large pot of water to a boil and add in the gnocchi. Boil for 4 minutes until the gnocchi pieces are firm and puffy.
  8. Meanwhile, heat a large sauce pan over medium-high heat and add in the vegan butter, coconut sugar, most of the sage (reserve some for a garnish), and the salt and bring to a slight bubble.
  9. Drain the cooked gnocchi from the pot and transfer to the pan with the butter sauce then saute for 4-5 minutes until the gnocchi begins to slightly brown.
  10. Divide gnocchi among 3-4 servings and garnish with more fresh sage and vegan parmesan cheese if desired.
  11. Enjoy!

Notes

I recommend cooking the sweet potatoes ahead of time. If cooking at the same time as making ghnocchi, simply peel and cut the sweet potato and boil for 20-minutes or until fork tender, drain, and let cool before processing.
