A Detoxifying Arugula Smoothie (that tastes amazing!)
It’s time for another delicious and healthy smoothie recipe!
I love smoothies this time of year. Even though it’s chilly outside, I’m usually craving refreshing, lightened up meals post-holidays and I love coupling healthy, energizing foods with the start of a brand new year.
This delicious arugula smoothie is filling, refreshing, and contains a ton of antioxidants, protein power, healthy fats, and energy-boosting carbohydrates. Arugula, also known as “rocket” green, is the star ingredient but the taste is subtle and blends wonderfully with the other additions.
Using Arugula in Smoothies
Arugula is a wonderful, nutritional powerhouse in the greens category. It isn’t the most common smoothie ingredient in comparison to other greens like spinach, but it’s a fantastic addition to many smoothies as it adds a ton of nutrition and green goodness. When it comes to using arugula in smoothies, I recommend going with 1/2 cup of fresh arugula per serving of smoothie as to not overwhelm the smoothie but add just the right dose of green, arugula goodness.
Arugula goes especially well with tropical fruits like pineapple or mango or tangy apple and cinnamon.
What Does Arugula Taste Like?
Arugula is a unique leafy green and has a very specific taste. It’s rather bitter, peppery, and has almost a spicy kick to it, but not the same as a spice with heat. The flavor has some bite to it and works best in small doses and can be combined with other more subtle greens like spinach or romaine.
In this smoothie, there’s a small hint of arugula taste but it’s subtle as the sweetness of the other ingredients tones down the arugula kick and balances it nicely.
Health Benefits of Arugula
Arugula is definitely considered a superfood (just like the superfoods I used in my latest smoothie recipe!)
superfood:
a nutrient-rich food considered to be especially beneficial for health and well-being.
It has incredible health benefits and can be enjoyed in many ways – smoothies, salads, on top of healthy pizza as a garnish, in a sandwich, or simply tossed with olive oil and placed alongside your favourite grilled protein.

Arugula Smoothie Ingredients
To make this tasty and nutritious smoothie you need only 8 ingredients! With a mix of whole-food, natural ingredients there’s a perfect blend of sweet, tart, smooth, and peppery flavour.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Fresh arugula
- Banana (frozen)
- Green apple
- Cinnamon
- Almond butter
- Raw honey
- Vanilla almond milk (unsweetened)
- Vanilla plant protein powder or unflavoured collagen peptides
The protein powder in this smoothie is optional but I highly recommend adding it. The protein helps to make the smoothie more filling, balances the natural sugars from the fruit and honey, and brings in all the benefits that protein does, making this smoothie a well-rounded, well-balanced meal or snack.
