The Most Refreshing Lemon Ginger Smoothie

For many of you regular Nutrition in the Kitch readers, this lemon ginger detoxifying smoothie is nothing new! It’s actually an older recipe I’ve decided to bring back into the spotlight because 1) it’s the perfect time for it (post-holidays!) and 2) everyone new to NITK the community absolutely needs to see it and of course, try it!

This detox smoothie has been one of my long time favorites and for good reason, it tastes like one of my favorite desserts…lemon meringue pie, but has none of the refined sugars, flour, or other not-so-healthy ingredients and instead is loaded with fresh lemon, frozen fruits, fresh ginger, and creamy coconut milk.

Healthy smoothie recipes like this one make it hard to feel like you’re on a diet because they taste sooo good. If you can lose weight while feeling like you’re cheating on a diet then the more power to you because being healthy should be fun and delicious detox smoothies like this one are a lot of fun to both make and enjoy!

The Smoothie Detoxifiers

In this delicious drink, you’ll find a few key ingredients that happen to be particularly “detoxifying” or have properties that help boost the body’s natural detoxification process.

  • Lemon: Lovely lemons are loaded with Vitamin C which is great for health, but the kicker with lemons is that they naturally contain citric acid. This compound stimulates the saliva glands to produce more saliva. When we produce more saliva, we also produce more digestive enzymes. Those specific digestive enzymes help our bodies break down foods better which promotes improved digestion, and in turn, helps to cleanse the body! There are also powerful antioxidants found in lemons including one antioxidant in particular called d-limonene. This powerful compound stimulates the liver to produce more enzymes that aid in the natural detoxification process of the liver. Lemons can help boost metabolism too!

  • Ginger: This second detoxifying ingredient becomes the perfect complement to lemon in this smoothie as it also promotes detoxification through natural compounds found in ginger called gingerols and shoals. These funny-sounding compounds promote detoxification by speeding up the movement of food through the digestive system. Combine fresh grated ginger and lemon and you’ve got a detoxification powerhouse!

  • Chia Seeds: These little seeds help to detoxify the body by moving waste through the digestive system efficiently like a “chimney sweep”. By cleansing the digestive system they help to rid the body of toxins that can stick around too long if digestion is sluggish or constipation is a common symptom you experience. The key to consuming chia seeds is pairing them with ample amounts of liquid which helps them move through the digestive system smoothly.

Other Detox Smoothie Ingredients You’ll Need:

To make the lemony deliciousness shine through in this smoothie, I decided not to use banana, a common smoothie fruit as it can overpower in flavor and instead I used the following complimentary ingredients and fresh fruits:

  • Frozen Peach
  • Frozen Pineapple a great ingredient for anti-inflammatory benefits
  • Frozen Mango
  • Coconut Milk (from the carton, not canned) -unsweetened almond milk can also work
  • Raw Honey (you can also use coconut nectar for vegan)
  • Collagen Peptides (optional, substitute for vanilla plant-based protein for vegan) – collagen adds a nice dose of gut-healthy proteins for blood sugar stabilization and to balance out the natural sugars in the smoothie from the fruits! I always make sure to add a protein source to my smoothies so either collagen or plant-based protein powder is a great option!

Step-by-Step Instructions

  • Add all the ingredients to a blender.
  • Blend until smooth (about 1 minute). If desired add in more liquid to make the smoothie thinner.
  • Serve immediately.
  • Enjoy!

  • This looks like just the kind of thing I need right now to boost my immune system! I imagine the peach/pineapple/mango adds a lovely sweetness to balance the lemon – I’ll have to give this a go this weekend 🙂

  • Happy New Year Christal! Loved this smoothie! The kids and my husband, whom said that sounded gross, really enjoyed it!

  • Oh yum…it’s summer here in Australia and the ingredients are only as far away as the greengrocers – and fresh so I’ll have to either freeze the fruit or add a little ice – no problems. Thank you for the recipe can’t wait to try it.

    Happy New Year – 2018!!!! Angela X

  • Thank you for this recipe. I made it and it is delicious!
Could you tell me more about how to use this recipe? Do you drink this once a day, all day, use it so many times a week, etc.?

    • Hi Olivia! So glad you like it! Having this smoothie once a day in the morning would be a great health boost. Even a couple times a week will have benefits 🙂

  • I think I found this recipe early last year. It’s a regular in our smoothie rotation! Delicious and refreshing! I always make it if I feel a cold coming on (along with eating fresh garlic) and have avoided being sick all year. Thank you!!

  • Beautiful photos! Do you think it would be just as detoxifying in juice form? Not sure why, but I’m more in a juice mood than a smoothie mood. I assume that the lemon + ginger effect would be just as good, right?

    • Hi Bridget! It definitely would be cleansing, however it wouldn’t be substantial for a meal so I would have that first thing in the morning before breakfast! 🙂

  • Happy New Year, Christal! This looks great and my Vitamix is on the counter ready to whip it up. Just one question: I have come across ‘coconut cream’ as an ingredient a few times lately and I am not sure exactly what it is.. Please clear this up for me. Thanks!
    Deb

    • Hi Deb, it’s a product that is found typically in the can that has only the cream from coconut – you can make your own by buying a can of full fat coconut milk and refrigerating it over night (the whole can), then in the morning, open the can and scoop out the “cream” on top, the coconut water will separate and you can just discard it!

      • Thanks, Christal! I couldn’t wait overnight, so I just opened the can of coconut milk very carefully and scooped the cream off the top! This smoothie just earned a place in our regular smoothy rotation! I have been alternating green and red smoothies, now we have a yellow one to add to the mix 🙂
        Thanks again for the inspiration!

  • Happy new year Christal 😀 I enjoyed your little lesson on ginger and lemon there 🙂 And I also reckon that I’d love me one of those smoothies today! I was hosting a little get-together for the bells last night, and ended up staying awake until silly o’clock, I am sure this zingy goodness would wake me up for sure 😀 AND I bought an extra large piece of ginger in the shop today – it’s a sign! 🙂
I hope you have had a good start to the new year xx

  • I love this recipe of lemon and ginger! I usually have it daily for all the reasons you mentioned.
I still need to get your book. We are heading south to Key West. Once we are settled I can’t wait to load it up!!!
    Keep up the good work!
