Mint Chocolate Green Protein Smoothie

Β

We have been thoroughly enjoying our time here in Maui and I hope you have been thoroughly enjoying the recipe revamp posts I’ve been sharing on the blog while I’m away. Today I’m bringing the spotlight back onto this delicious and healthy Mint Chocolate Green Protein Smoothie recipe that I originally shared on Nutrition in the Kitch waaayyy back in March of 2013.

I made this recipe as a themed recipe for St. Patrick’s Day, and yes in honour of the date, I’m sharing it again… but in a much prettier way (the old photos are hilarious!). I’ve heard people call this green smoothie for St. Patrick’s Day a “shamrock shake” so this can definitely fall under that category too because it’s a kind of a shake (a smoothie) and has beautiful bright green hue.

The special ingredient that gives this smoothie it’s bright green colour is my favourite smoothie leafy green, spinach. I am always amazed at how much spinach I can pack into a smoothie just like this one and actually not taste it at all! It’s such a subtle ingredient that blends so well with fruits in a smoothie that you really don’t even know it’s there aside from the colour, and even the colour can be masked easily with fruits like raspberries and blueberries.

With the combination of chocolate protein powder, frozen banana, spinach, almond milk, coconut nectar (or honey), peppermint extract, and chopped dark chocolate this smoothie tastes sweet, rich, and chocolaty and not as if it contains any leafy greens at all!

I got a little creative with my styling when I revamped this recipe and decided to create this pretty chocolate swirl on the glass and over the top of the smoothie. This is definitely not necessary and a step that can be skipped right by if you are short for time!

Since doing my 10-day Green Smoothie Cleanse last month I’ve been enjoying more green smoothies than ever before and so has everyone in my family. This mint chocolate green protein smoothie is no exception and I’m happy that Hemsley loves it as much as I do. The more ways I can sneak veggies into that little one the better, she’s definitely in that picky toddler stage so vegetables can be a struggle.

This mint chocolate green protein smoothie is really so easy to put together:

1. Assemble your ingredients

2. Pop them all into the blender and blend away until a thick, smooth consistency is reached…. and

3. Sprinkle with chopped dark chocolate (and do the swirl if you want to get really fancy)!

Then…devour!

Mint Chocolate Green Protein Smoothie

Prep time
Total time

Author:
Serves: 1
Ingredients
  • 1 scoop chocolate protein powder (any plant-based brand works, I prefer Genuine Health or Sun Warrior)
  • 1 tablespoon ground flaxseed
  • 1 medium banana (frozen banana works best, peel and freeze ahead of time)
  • 1 cup fresh spinach
  • ¼ tsp pure peppermint extract or 1 mint leaf
  • 4 ice cubes
  • ¾ cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 1 tablespoon coconut nectar or honey (for non-vegan)
  • 1 tablespoon dairy-free chopped dark chocolate
  • Optional: 2 tablespoons melted dark chocolate to create the chocolate swirl on the glass and on the top of the smoothie.
Instructions
  1. Blend all ingredients except the dark chocolate.
  2. The mixture will be rather thick so make sure you have a good high speed blender.
  3. If you prefer a thinner consistency, add more almond milk.
  4. Garnish with the chopped dark chocolate.
  5. Swirl with dark chocolate if desired (see notes)
  6. Enjoy!
Notes
To create the chocolate swirl, melt dark chocolate chips over low heat, then tip your glass to the side and drizzle in the melted chocolate while twirling the glass, then place the glass in the freezer to harden the chocolate swirl for about 5 minutes, then pour in the smoothie and swirl the remaining melted dark chocolate on the top of the smoothie.

  • This is SO delicious. Just made it after a workout. I ate it out of bowl and felt like I was eating ice cream πŸ™‚ I usually add chia seeds to my smoothies. My roommate and I also made your black bean goat cheese raspberry brownies a few weeks ago. Love your blog!

    • Thanks so much Danielle! Yep, every time I make a protein smoothie I feel like I am eating ice cream because I make them nice and thick! It’s a guilt free treat!

  • My favorite smoothie blend: 2-3 handfuls of kale, 1 frozen banana, 1 scoop vanilla protein powder, 1 tbsp peanut butter, 1 cup almond milk.

  • I already blend frozen spinach into protein smoothies (hey! I usually don’t have ice, okay!) but I should add mint and some choco chips next time! I didn’t even realize I was being festive πŸ˜‰

  • You could try frozen peaches in place in the banana and add cinnamon, nutmeg, and vanilla protein powder to make a peach pie flavor. It comes out a little less thick, so I’d add less almond milk. I also like to do a banana coconut chai by adding coconut extract, cardamom, and cinnamon.

    • Mmm delicious!! I love the coconut chai idea too! I have never seen coconut extract anywhere though! I’ve looked for it in the past! Where do you get yours??

      • Really? I usually just get it from Kroger, Target, or Walmart. I suppose it’s more easily found here in the States! I put it in everything! πŸ™‚

        • We don’t have Kroger or Target (yet).. but I will for sure check Walmart next time I’m there! I’m sure I’ve got to be able to find it somewhere! I’m planning on doing a Hawaiian inspired smoothie for when we head to Hawaii next month! πŸ™‚ Coconut extract would be perfect for that!

  • This looks so good! Mint chocolate is one of my favourite combos. I’m gonna try this one for sure!

Some of my favourite smoothies are frozen banana, frozen blueberries and a bit of matcha powder or frozen mango and spinach, both with vanilla protein. I think you had a recipe like this but I also love chocolate protein with frozen banana and strawberries so it’s frosty like! Frozen bananas make every smoothie more amazing πŸ™‚

    • I know! Frozen bananas are key to get that smooth ice cream like texture! Yum, I have to give matcha powder a try in my smoothies! Yeah, the mint chocolate in this one is so yummy, reminds me of a blizzard but obviously MUCH much much healthier! Lol!
